What Is Pre-Prosthetic Surgery?
Some patients who have undergone tooth extraction(s) elect to have dentures fitted to replace the missing tooth or teeth. To ensure that the dentures fit properly and comfortably and that the mouth’s shape and size are maintained, your surgeon may need to prepare the bone ridge in the mouth through pre-prosthetic surgery. This can be done in our rooms under local or twilight anaesthesia or in the hospital under general anaesthesia.
You may require one or more of the following pre-prosthetic procedures:
- Reshaping or smoothing of the jaw bone
- Removing excess bone or gum tissue
- Reducing the bone ridge
Dr. McGrath will discuss all of your options for tooth replacement, surgery, and anaesthesia before performing pre-prosthetic surgery.
