Here at Geelong Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, we understand that any surgery can disrupt your busy, everyday schedule. Most of our patients ask when they can get back to their normal routine after a surgery, and it is common to be somewhat concerned about the post-surgical experience. To help you navigate your pre-surgery and post-surgery experience, we came up with some great tips to help you prepare for recovery and achieve the best possible results. With these tips to guide you, you’ll be ready for treatment and on your way to a newer, healthier smile in no time!
Schedule Strategically: We understand that patients have numerous responsibilities they’d like to resume as soon as possible following surgery, but the key to a positive recovery is giving yourself an adequate recovery window. If you try to resume normal activities too soon, your recovery can slow, or you may experience complications; this is not worth the risk! Fortunately, the vast majority of oral surgery procedures are outpatient and require minimal recovery time, but there are some that necessitate longer rest. Do your best to pick a surgery date around a holiday weekend where you’ll have an extra day off, or choose a time that will be less busy with work, school, or other obligations. We are happy to work around your schedule and find a time that is best for you.
Go Grocery Shopping in Advance: After most surgeries, it is common to experience slight swelling or soreness, and we recommended that you eat soft foods to avoid complications. If you are receiving anesthesia, you will be unable to drive after your procedure, so instead of asking someone to bring you food or trying to make do with what you have, visit the grocery store the night before (or even two nights before) your procedure. Stock up on your favorite soft foods! Some of our favorites are mashed potatoes, oatmeal, applesauce, nutritional drinks, and soups—delicious! Planning ahead will make it easy to get proper nutrition during your recovery.
Do Something Fun (and Relaxing) Post-Surgery: Many patients don’t realize how important it is to plan some activities to do while recovering. Take some time to find interesting books, movies, and shows you want to catch up on, or even some puzzles and games to keep you occupied and entertained. Keeping yourself busy actually helps—time will go by much faster if you keep your mind busy, and you won’t put too much stress on your body post-surgery.
It’s always important to discuss your specific pre- and post-operative instructions with your oral surgeon, but using these tips (in addition to the directions given by your doctor) will help you have a more positive recovery experience. We genuinely care about our patients’ well-being, and we want your recovery to be a success!
